Well… depends on what you mean by good pay. I’m still a student on a scholarship so I get an allowance from the university which is not quite a salary. So far, the allowance is enough for me to support myself and have the occasional good time (dinner, movies, shopping) with my family and friends. So if you ask me if I get a good pay from working as a scientist full time, I would say yes (of course, I’m not really that rich, if you ask me).
When I was a student (back in the early 2000s) we always used to moan that scientists got paid really badly. But once you get established and are senior enough to run your own lab, then you get paid pretty well. So I can’t really complain.
It is like any career any will get better the more experience you have. Plus with science there is opportunity to go into either academia (lecturing etc.) or industry. There are many options to choose from and that means there is quite a big variety in pay. But if you work hard then it can be really good.
There are lots of different science jobs and pay varies a bit depending on what qualifications you need and how much responsibility you have. Generally I think pay for scientists is pretty good now, and like Darren I can’t complain 🙂
