I have won awards during my Primary and Secondary School days, mostly academic (yes, I was/am quite a geek). But I did win one or two during essay writing competitions. If I win I’m a Scientist, then I can add another one to my collection!
I speak English and Mandarin. At home, I speak mainly English because my parents speak English too. Because English is the working language in Singapore, I also speak English in the lab. I use Mandarin very occasionally with my friends or in non-formal settings such as family gatherings where some members of my family may be more comfortable speaking in Mandarin. So I’m pretty sure I’m better in English than Mandarin because I have more practice using it.
I’ve won a couple of awards for my work. The best was the Verne Chapman Young Scientist Award, for which I got $500 (which I spent on an Xbox360) and free trips to Crete and Florida. Who says science isn’t glamorous?
I speak English and Afrikaans (and a tiny bit of Zulu) because I used to live in Africa when I was young.
I haven’t won any awards recently but hopefully as I continue working and developing my skills I’ll receive one in the future.
In terms of languages I speak English and I have been learning Japanese for the past four years. I find it really interesting learning about a different culture through the language and it is my aim to learn another one in the future. I definitely think it’s useful know another language.
I most recently won an award of innovation – a smart way of saying I came up with an idea that was never thought off before. I can speak 3 languaes, French, Irish and English!
