      Cancer is caused by mutations. Mutations are mistakes in the DNA. So cells with mutations do not die naturally and multiply out of control, leading to cancer.

      Some chemicals cause mutations in DNA, UV light from sunlight can cause them too (a major cause of skin cancer). Some viruses do as well which is why we have an hpv vaccine.
