The Large Hadron Collider is a particle accelerator. Which basically means it is a machine that uses huge magnets to make tiny, sub-atomic particles travel at very fast speeds in beams.

Its actually a large circular tunnel, 17 miles around. The particles are accelerated as they travel around the tunnel and are smashed into each other at high speed. The atomic effects of this is then measured and we hope to learn from them some very important information about physics.
