I have been working on a strange project for a while – trying to work out what smells unborn babies are exposed to and how that affects their later behaviour.
What I found out during this project is that if you feed a pregnant mouse garlic, the garlic smell goes through her body into the amniotic fluid that the baby in the womb is floating in. The baby learns the smell of amniotic fluid and remembers it, and so after it is born it will prefer garlic.
So, if you think about this, it probably means the stuff your mum ate while you were still developing inside her womb helped decide what sort of stuff you like to eat now.
