      We’ve made some nano-materials that act like tiny sponges and soak up metal ions like silver. They then release the metal ions under certain conditions, very slowly. If the metal is silver, the materials could be used to make better wound dressings as silver can kill bacteria and stop infections.

      We have taken some nerves from the noses and male and female mice, and we are looking at all the genes that are turned on and comparing how much each gene is turned on in each sex. The information we get out if it suggests some genes are turned on only in males, and then only in males that are dominant (i.e. only in the mice that are the leaders of their social group) . This is very exciting, because it suggests to us dominant males actually sense the world differently from everyone else, as this might also explain why they act differently.

      I’m trying to genetically engineer the microalgae to make them better at photosynthesis. It’s exciting because no one has really done it before.
