I liked all the sciences at high school but I was best at chemistry so I decided to do that.
In my final year of uni I had to pick a research project to do. I had a pretty good idea of stuff I didn’t want to do from all the classes we’d had. I went to see some academics and asked them about their projects. One really stood out, making molecules called dendrimers which are snowflake like. The pictures of the molecules were so pretty, I decided I wanted to try and make them. That sort of chemistry is called materials chemistry and that’s my field!

I have been interested in Microbiology since I was in Secondary school. For my research project during my final year of university, I knew I wanted to work on a different microorganism other than the more well researched bacteria or fungi. So I decided to work on producing biofuel from microalgae as I wanted to work on something different from the usual. And that’s how I found myself using microalgae as a way of saving the environment!

During my undergraduate I became increasingly aware of the growing environmental concerns and pressures affecting the world and wanted to make a difference to it if possible. With my background in chemistry moving into solar technology seemed the way forward and I believe is something that will be increasingly useful for the future of humanity.
