      You can draw stars with as many points as you like, but the 5-pointed star is by far the most common.

      Thats probably because it is formed by the shape of a pentagram. Pentagrams were used a lot in ancient civilizations. For example, the Babylonianans used it to represent the orientation of 5 planets: Jupiter, Mercury, Mars, Saturn, and Venus. Early Christians used it to represent the 5 senses. SO it has a long history as a symbol.
