Gender is determined by chromosomes which are tightly coiled DNA. Females have 2 X chromosomes while males have 1 X chromosome and 1 Y chromosome. Gender is determined at conception when you were just a single cell formed from the union of sperm and egg. Sperm carry either the X chromosome or the Y chromosome whereas eggs only carry the X chromosome.

Hence, it is by chance that you are a girl because you happened to receive 2 X chromosomes.
