I was interested in microorganisms so I always wanted to do research which was related to Microbiology. During my Honours research project as a final year university student, I jumped at the first chance to do a project to investigate the production of biofuel from microalgae. As compared to other more well known microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi, not much is known about microalgae. So I found that area of research particularly interesting.
For my PhD project, I stayed on in the same lab to continue microalgal research in the area of using them to capture carbon dioxide and reduce carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere.
I guess I was lucky that I knew what I was interested in quite early. If you are interested in research but not sure what area to go into, I suggest that the best way to find out is to read more and talk more to scientists who are in various areas. Also, try to get exposure by doing research projects if you have the chance. This should give you a better idea of what you like to do in research.
