Dogs are animals which live in packs. In a pack, there is always a leader, known as the alpha dog. As the master of the dog, the dog sees us as part of their pack. As a dog will want to be the leader of the pack, it shows its dominance by walking in front of their master whom they consider as part of their family!

Really well trained dogs understand that the human is the pack leader so they will walk beside the master or behind them.

The other reason is because they are extremely stimulated by the environment and want to explore it. Dogs can smell much, much better than we can which means for them smells are like plumes or ribbons that they can follow to their source. Once they “catch” a smell, they will want to follow it to found who or what produced it. This is largely why dogs will pull their masters along on a walk.
