There is evidence to suggest the universe is expanding (look up Red-Shift), and an expanding universe fits with a lot of physics theories about the universe. This definitely isn’t my area of science, but this article is quite interesting: http://skyserver.sdss.org/dr1/en/astro/universe/universe.asp and explains it a bit.

According to the big bang, the universe started from an infinitely small point and expanded. In fact, it is expanding at an increasing rate as galaxies are moving away from us at faster and faster speeds.
